Before the work of Jesus on the Cross and the resurrection the old testament saints went to paradise in the center of the earth. There are many scriptural references to this fact.

Thief on the cross Luke 23:43

Rich man and Lazarus Luke 16:20 through 24

1 Peter 3:9

Mathew 12:40

Obviously, He "ascended " from earth to heaven. So it 's only logical that He had first done the opposite descended from heaven to earth. He didn 't "ascend " FROM a different place than He had descented TO first. Hell was not part of either trip. It was to earth and back to heaven like the bottom of a ladder and the top.
