This verse 1John 3 8 is a very interesting scripture. "He that committeth sin is of the devil. " This scripture when rightly divided has to mean, "He that habitually practices sin is of the devil. The same reasoning could be used for 1John 3 9 "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin. " When rightly divided this scripture has to mean, "Whosoever is born of God doth not habitually practice sin . We all know that there is no person but "Jesus Christ " who has not, nor does not sin. Yet those who are living a godly life daily, do not "habitually practice sin " because they are born of God. Notice the great apostle Paul said, "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before " Philippians 3 13 .

It is a very powerful scripture. It really works. Use it during warfare. The reason the son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

The devil has lost the grace for repentance because of his unrepentant nature. Therefore who ever sinneth habitually and is unrepentant is of the Devil. The Bible translation by Weymouth explains better. This is Actually the basic difference between humans and the devil. We have the grace and power to confess And repent of our sins, a privilege the devil has lost from the beginning. Therefore 1 John 3 8 is a War fare prayer verse that is directed at the devil and his unrepentant agents and people who might be against your life and your progress.

It means Holiness glorify's God, while sin glorify's devil.
Toni's comment on 2014-01-07 07:43:22:
If we sin, we are not Christ's, we are the devil's. Those who love the Lord, will keep His commandments. (John 14:15)We are to walk in the newness of life, which means our old ways - the life of sin and iniquity, are put to death by Jesus's death. We are now resurrected and living a Holy Ghost filled life of righteousness made possible by the death and resurrection of Christ. Anybody who still sins and says they are Christ's is deceived and still bound by the devil. Now the Word of God is powerful...mighty...sharper than a two-edged sword..it cuts to the marrow. Don't be deceived. There is no way to continue in sin and truly have Jesus.

I believe that the works of the Devil here in 1John 3 verse 8 refers to all forces of darkness that want to stop your journey to greatness.
