At this time we are not yet complete we wait and groan within our selves waiting for perfection. John feared because perfection had not yet came. And the work John was to accomplish was in part, but when Christ who is our life shall appear then shall we appear with him in glory, and we shall see him as he is for we then shall be like him.

Jesus shows himself to John and tells him not to be afraid, because he was Alpha and Omega.
