My understanding is that Jesus cured the man and asked him to say nothing about it, but to show himself to the priest. By not saying who had cured him it would have left people pondering on what had occurred. Also by remaining quiet he would have protected himself from harm. Sadly he didn't listen to the Lord. When the lord told him to do as Moses commanded,I believe he was asking the man to obey the commandments passed down to Moses, as a thank you for his being cured.
