It think it is analogus to the Tree faith and its fruit good works . For just 'proclaiming ' one has faith and bearing no tangible evidence is of no use. The Lord himself tells us to 'test ' the spirit by its fruit. God does indeed look for the fruit and then cuts it down if it has not borne any. So i think, yeah, of course....you can 't speak of doing good without authentic Faith in the first place. But its more like a call to Action. In short, 2 Cor 5:7 the benchmark ..James 2:17 the sure test for far sighted vision! :-

The scriptures says without faith it is impossible to please God so of course without faith you can 't inherit eternal life, especially if your still in sin and Jesus who is holy.. he wants nothing to do with sin unless a man or women repents and is born of water and spirit then they will receive eternal life.
