I just want to know why was a female heifer, and female she-goat was used? Why females?

I like the way Joseph Prince interprets this. Because God causes Abraham to fall asleep the true covenant is not made between God and Abraham, but God and Himself (or Christ).
The fiery pot and the burning candlestick rep. Christ. The covenant occurs when the two partakers pass thru the dead carcasses and it's understood if you do not hold up your end of the covenant, the same thing that happened to these animals will happen to you.
