You must have a common ground that is same religion A good example is Samson he married a philistine and disaster followed Ahab married Jezebel and idol worship was introduced in lsrael So many a times you are influenced in the wrong direction instead of you influencing

those who build it labor in vain.

this scripture not only speaks of marriage but also of being in close relationship with non believers. IE. Friends , what fellowships does light have with the darkness is saved by the blood of Jesus and unsaved. Jesus was and is the son of God he is the only one who went to the unsaved to teach and preach and love them into seeing their own , need for him . religion is an Institution made by man . not God. God calls us to a relationship with him, His Spirit and His Son. If we are genuinely seeking God and a relationship with Him , you will not be caught up in being unequally yoked with any nonbeliever . the question we need to ask ourselves is are we witnessing to them as nonbelievers or are they influencing us to backslide away from God.......

To me this talks about the 50% divorce rate in usa. A marriage of one believer to a non believer, cannot possibly succeed

I think it means if you marry or yoke up with a bond of anykind with unbelievers in Christ that you will reap not only the consequences of your sins, but theirs also.
