As I have come to believe; we are a soul, have a personal spirit/life aspect, and live in a body. Our soul (psuche) is said to be the home of the will, emotions, and the intellect, our personal identity i.e. The descendants of Jacob were 70 souls. In creation, God formed man's body from the dust, breathed the breath of life, Spirit and man became a living soul. So I think we are souls having a spirit. Other spirits can reside there presenting their wares for our souls to choose or reject, hense temptation. Only by God's Spirit can one evict evil spirits. All three aspects can become addicted to various poisons. If one is restrained from a harmful substance, the body overcomes the need for it, but the soul may still be addicted and pull the body back to ruin.
